Travel In The City – The Hyde Hotel

#WhatTheFoodShow host, Aimee Eveleigh is back with her monthly feature and this time reviews The Hyde Hotel

For years, the hospitality industry in South Africa was limited to only a handful of options  when it came to the type of thing a local professional could expect when in the city on business: You’d either have to fork out a few grand a night to stay at an inner-city 4 or 5 star hotel – or you’d have to fork out even more to stay in a luxury guest house in surrounding suburbia , except you’d be spending the extra cash on your transport INTO the city each day.

Similarly, when it came to self-catering accommodation, one was very much limited to a dilapidated guest-house barely scratching the surface of the 3-star obligatory minimum standard, and if lucky, it’d be somewhere on the Atlantic Seaboard offering internationals ” A Self-Catering Sea Side Holiday Adventure “In the World of the Travelling Business Professional this is hardly the sort of thing befitting the Post-Graduate Professional, Cutting his teeth in the dot com market place and trying to establish himself as a worthy contender among other Corporate Heavy-Weights.

We thirty-something entrepreneurs WANT the luxury, we NEED to be close the the CBD, but do we HAVE to be forking out for  continental breakfasts and romantic turn-downs too? Hardly. As most of us follow the Tim Noakes prescribed lifestyle anyway, the extra money wasted on Croissants and butter is simply unnecessary.

But what if I told you, that I have recently discovered an absolute GEM on The Atlantic Seaboard that offers BOTH options at ONCE? In other words, they have cleverly and duplicitously created a seamless form of accommodation that specifically serves the type of traveler who is:

Time starved

In and out of the city, frequently.

Needs to work and stay focused

still wants the OPTION of a bit of leisure if the mood takes his fancy

Might want to cook for himself some nights

Might just want to splurge and have room service

Needs to be within spitting distance from the CBD with scheduled complimentary shuttle times

Doesn’t want to spend 5-star hotel rates or pay for Wi-Fi

Still wants unrivalled luxury…

And, I give to you – The Hyde Hotel. It literally meets ALL of the above check points, and more.

So ultimately , the type of establishment that I have just mentioned would need to be a quasi-apartment block, with individually appointment suites that operated EXACTLY like uber-trendy and fully kitted flats. They’d need to have kitchens in each, with all the bells and whistles, a  separate lounge to bedroom situation , and it would need to feel like a real home away from home.

But then, the option to have that romantic turn-down, a drink at the hotel bar, a buffet breakfast or even an in-room and chef-prepared and specially delivered dinner would also need to be on the cards….and miraculously, The Hyde, does both! It’s a hotel AND a self-catering apartment block, and YOU get to choose how YOU want to experience your stay in this luxurious little retreat .

Another reason I’m incredibly impressed with The Hyde is that they’ve also considered the need for frequent travelers and business professionals to , perhaps, need to double up their stay into a meeting venue. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve had to travel into a new city, on business , to do a presentation or a speaking event and have had to pay two SEPARATE bills for two separate forms of service within the hospitality industry and deal with two separate groups of people: ie, stay at a guest house, SANS a meeting venue, and have had to utilize a different venue for the event.

Yes, one can always go to a 5 star international edifice and pay through your nose, but the whole POINT of this exercise is to find ONE location that does EVERYTHING. So, thankfully, the Hyde has fantastic and state of the art function and conferencing facilities, so there’s no need to have to sleep in a room outside of the building you’re conducting your business in.

Oh, and if the fact that they are LITERALLY only 8 minutes IN traffic outside of the CBD, and , wait for it, a 10 second WALK from the BEACH, I also found THIS on their website too:

  • Order our fabulous “Picnic Baskets” to enjoy at the beach, on a drive round the Peninsula or to take along on your Winelands Tour.
  • Book your own “Private Chef” to prepare and cook your meals for you in your Suite – T&C apply.
  • Group bookings are welcome in our Restaurant or Conference Room with either Set Menus or Buffet options available. For the more exclusive events we will tailor make your menu to suit your individual needs.
  • On request we offer Halaal friendly and Kosher meals ordered in specially.

Um….yes please.

Finally – I did a quick cross check of their rates compared to per night and per week rates at other International Hotel Brands in the CBD. And. no surprise here – The Hyde is the most affordable out of all of them.

I’m well-impressed. And I know I’m going to be hard-pressed to find anything close to the Hyde in terms of affordability and convenience, anytime soon.
