Rumours persist that the contribution of animal laboratory surgeon Hamilton Naki to the world’s first human heart transplant was not acknowledged. However, as South Africa marks the 50th anniversary of this groundbreaking event this year, author Michael Lee’s latest documentary novel, Heartbeat – a novel memorialising the first human heart transplant, clarifies Naki’s career.
