State Of The Media – November 2018

In this show Nadia chats to Leigh Andrews, Editor-in-Chief of Marketing & Media and Angie White, Head Of Press Office Department at Bizcommunity.

Everyone says things slow down as we approach the end of the year, but if anything, we seem to have more than ever to focus on. For example…

Creative Award season is in full swing! In the past few weeks we’ve covered the Direct Marketing Association of South Africa’s Assegai Awards, where Joe Public Connect came out as agency of the year; the Vodacom Journalist of the Year announcement across various regions; the Pendoring Awards, for advertising in home tongue languages; the MMA Smarties Awards for mobile creative; the Sunday Times Top Brand Awards, Kantar Millward Brown’s first ever BrandZ results for the most valuable brands in South Africa, and of course the much anticipated Loeries Rankings – watch for my coverage of this year’s biggest and brightest brands.

Other big stories in the media space have been the Khashoggi murder mystery, fallout from the Sunday Times’ now-discredited reports and the capture and release of the Committee to Protect Journalists’ own Angela Quintal and Muthoki Mumo in Tanzania. The CPJ confirms a false tweet was sent from Quintal’s personal Twitter account, with repeated attempts made to access her email. This all highlights the importance of media freedom.

There is also positive news, with the launch of independent TV news channel Open News, which broadcasts daily from 5pm to 11pm, exclusively on OpenView channel 120. I interviewed MD Nisa Allie about how they brought the channel to air, an important read as November is also #EntrepreneurMonth on Bizcommunity.

We’re shining a spotlight on the startups and self-starters, sharing their success stories across our industry portals. Keep an eye on our special section at for the latest updates, how to’s and tips.

Lastly, there’s still a little bit of time to get ready for #BizTrends2019…

There’s still a little bit of time for your #BizTrends2019 contributions as we’ve extended the submission deadline to 15 November due to popular demand. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, we’re looking for exclusive insight and opinion from the leadership of ad agencies, marketers, futurists, media owners and industry experts on the key trends set to dominate your media space on 2019. These will go live as soon as the work year kicks off in January, so visit an idea of what to expect, and email for the full brief.
