We touched on some of the top April Fool’s Day jokes reported by media locally and globally last week. Unfortunately, just because it’s a day for foolery, doesn’t mean true hard news stops being published, which often leads to confusion. A good rule of thumb is to wait until afternoon when the jokes should stop. One of our favourites, because there’s always been a possibility of it coming true, was that of different time zones being implemented because of loadshedding.

We also looked at why children’s social media safety was in the spotlight after the wake of the #Momochallenge hoax. Described by Paper magazine as a “…saucer-eyed, lipless bird lady with trendy bangs and Voldemort nostrils,” Momo was the latest social media scare, reportedly being hacked into child-friendly apps such as Peppa Pig, Fornite and YouTube Kids. But a quote by Engadget clarified, “Your kids are fine, literally nobody on the entire internet has fallen for this — except, well, countless adults, law enforcement agencies, news outlets and school districts. You know, the responsible folks.” We researched a few ways to minimise some of that risk anyway, one of the top is to make children do their online browsing through Kiddle.co, the Google-powered search engine that aims to keep children safer online by blocking explicit images, videos and websites from search results.

Switching to an award focus, the end of March saw the IAB’s annual Bookmark Awards for digital excellence held at The Forum in Bryanston. We have all 142 winners on site and I interviewed Anthony Molyneaux, multimedia journalist at Tiso Blackstar Group, on his Online News Video Gold, which was presented for his nine-minute reconstruction video, which mapped out the final hours of murdered Stellenbosch student, Hannah Cornelius and the 11-hour rampage that left four victims in its wake. We’ll have more interviews featuring examples of the work that sparkles with digital excellence on site in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on the special section here.
