Review: Beluga

It’s so much more than just one of the best Sushi eateries in Cape Town.

Beluga’s popularity cannot be summed up or defined by just one ingredient. It really is a multifaceted, multisensory dining experience.

It could have a lot to do with the stunning cobble stone courtyard, which is complimented by the warm, wooden art-deco-with-a-hint-of-New-York-loft interior.

My husband will argue that hands down, they do some of the best ribs he has ever had and I am just in love with the steak dishes.

Others have attested to the friendly ambience and on-point service of the waitrons as well as the attentiveness of the floor managers, while yet others will testify that this is without a doubt, the best sushi and cocktail spot in town – Perhaps the reported stats that, annually, Beluga uses about 36,000kgs of Salmon, 24,000kgs of Tuna and approximately 4,000kgs of their signature after-dinner-mint-substitute – Jelly Beans. (Yes, you read that correctly, 4000kgs of Jelly Beans – in a year), can support this.

Whatever the reason, the fact that Beluga continues to grow in acclaim, can more than likely be attributed to a successful recipe which incorporates all of the above (and more), in just the perfect measurements, and specific to each of us who visit there.

We just don’t get tired of eating here and more often than not, the night really gets away from us. We aren’t the kind of diners to rush in and out of a restaurant and when you feel as relaxed and at-home as we do here, it’s easy to lose track of time, just socialising and enjoying the vibe.

Our recent visit was no exception.

I finally got to try something that I have been dying to treat my palette to – the Spaghetti and Meatballs. I wasn’t disappointed and I think that Beluga could, quite possibly, be my number one destination for this quintessential Italian dish. It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves and I think on the already impressive menu, it’s a dish that can just get ‘lost’ – but do yourself a flavour (yes, I said flavour, but you’ll be doing yourself a favour too), try it, if only for the tomato Ragoût. Ragoût is the French term used for stew and that the most apropos description of the tomato base of this dish. It is gorgeous and thick and more closely resembles the consistency of a stew, than that of a sauce and the helping is generous enough to compliment the pasta and meat, perfectly, in a word: Delizioso!

For starters though, we ordered something that is NOT on the menu. If you enjoy Tempura, order the Tuna or Salmon Crunch and ask them to deep fry it – we’ve named it the Tempura Crunch. It is divine.

Review: Beluga Restaurant

After the unforgettable Fillet and Crayfish signature dish I had at Sevruga recently, and after being blown away by the Pepper Crusted Beef Fillet, the last time we ate at Beluga, my husband decided to have the Flaked Sea Salt Fillet, which is served with silky smooth mashed potato and no less than two ‘home-made’ chutneys, an onion and a tomato. Both where sweet with a tiny bite, the perfect accompaniment to the mash and steak.

At home, I know I have a winner when then table falls silent once the food is served, so I think it’s safe to say that the dish indulged his carnivorous side and left him speechless. #Winner

We decided to share a dessert and, after much back-and-forth, trying to decide what to have, we settled on the Chocolate Truffle Cake – delicious Belgian chocolate cake served with vanilla bean ice cream and a snappy-licious, crunchy biscuit. I did have one complaint though – we asked for two spoons with the dessert (which we got), but we had to fight over of the yummy crunchy biscuit. It was that good.

Don’t forget that that fans of the #TwoBoringChicks and listeners of the #WhatTheFoodShow are entitled to a free plate of dim sum for everyone at your table AND 10% off cocktails, every day of the week, after 7-pm when you book and quote the #WTFShow.
