Review: Beluga Restaurant

Beluga Restaurant in Greenpoint has been around since 1999.

What started primarily as a French styled eatery has evolved into what can only be described as a local institution.The evolution of this iconic restaurant has seen it mature from a simple, yet acclaimed menu and 120 seater area, to more than 400 chairs in a space which has hosted princes, presidents, international sports teams, actors and singers alike.

Beluga’s rise to this status is due primarily to the stellar level of service and attention that they give to each and every customer and a menu which is constantly being re-engineered to the suite the palate of the client and the tastes of the time.

The #WhatTheFoodShow visited Beluga last week to test out some of their more locally inspired meat and potato dishes, which are designed with that extra fine dining edge that Beluga has become famous for, however, we did start with the sushi, since it is still some of the very best in Cape Town. This time we tried a selection of custom made Tuna Crunch Tempura and Philadelphia rolls made fresh in the Caviar Kitchen.

For mains though, I had Lamb Shoulder which is served on bed of buttered, silky, smooth mash potato that is so light, it seems to just evaporate away in your mouth with the first bite as it gently compliments the rich, tender cooked-to-utter-perfection Lamb. I would be lying if I told you that it was NOT one of the most delicious, locally inspired meals I have ever had.

My partner in crime for the evening, and my resident Rib and Steak expert went for the Signature Fillet and Rib special, which is pepper encrusted fillet, cooked to your specifications and a juicy off-the-bone Ribs. Upon questioning him for this review, two days later, about what the dish was served with he had this say ‘I cannot actually remember, the meat was that good’.

So if you really want to know what is served with a ‘signature’ fillet, get yourself to Beluga and try this trademark dish for yourself. Oh, and order a round of Jelly Babies (a shot)… Don’t ask why, just do it.

Without harping too much on that one aspect of the Caviar group which, for us at least, sets them aside from other restaurant chain, let me just remind you that you can expect such impeccable service from the team at Beluga, which ensures that your dinner or lunch experience is that much more rewarding.
