New Music: ‘Ballin’ – Jimmy Nevis

Ballin’ – the first single to be released off Quarter Life Crisis, was written by Nevis and co-produced by Sketchy Bongo.

The two artists – who collaborated on the 5FM Sony Xperia Mash Lab in early 2016 – decided to work together on the single, which Nevis claims acted as the muse and inspiration for the rest of the album. “The song is about living your best life,” says Nevis. “It’s all about being fearless!” Noting that he’s always been extremely vigilant of himself when writing songs in the past, this album Nevis opted to freestyle a lot whilst in studio. “For me this has been a whole new way of creating music and it feels so right, and I definitely think it comes across strongly in Ballin’.”

Bearing all in his latest and third studio album – Quarter Life Crisis – Nevis describes his current sound as “…an unapologetic and honest reflection of me at the age of 25; in all its glory and beautiful madness…” Inspiration for the album came from hardships, celebrations, lessons learned and even past music he wrote and never shared. “It’s been a long journey, and I can say that I’ve been working on this album for a total of two and a half years…,” adds Nevis.

Albeit some may say the musician is too young to even contemplate a life crisis – never mind one at the age of 25 – Nevis maintains that his high standards constantly push him to exceed his and everyone else’s expectations only adding intense pressure to be and do better all the time. “I’m very hard on myself and have so many goals I want to achieve in my lifetime…however, I also need to acknowledge and give thanks for having lived through 25 incredibly blessed years of life, which this album celebrates.”

Having experienced incredibly difficult times in late 2016 relating to his music career, and being exposed to the somewhat dark underbelly of the industry, Nevis was looking at completely throwing in the towel; leaving music altogether to travel and discover a new passion. “Music became boring for me and I wasn’t finding what I was looking for…,” he says. “In a way, I think the entire experience had to happen for me to dig as deep as I did to produce what I can now say I’m extremely proud of. This is a fresh start for me.”

The artist lists his faith, family and support structure as the daily sources he pulls from that keep him grounded and true to himself. “If there’s one message to be gained from my latest body of work, it is that we all need to acknowledge and embrace our strengths and weaknesses, be present in times of joy and sorrow, and accept all of life’s consequences as part of the process of life,” adds Nevis. “I read somewhere that happiness isn’t a state of mind but more of a wave you ride, and I find that to be such a profound and true statement…”

In July 2017, Nevis launched his personal fashion label York Yard by Jimmy Nevis. To date, the label has already celebrated two successful pop-up stores in Canal Walk and the V&A Waterfront in July and August respectively, and plans are underway for further pop-up stores across the country and an eCommerce site in the not-to-distant future. He has also announced a once-off show at GrandWest Arena in Cape Town on the 25th of November – Tickets available at Computicket.
