Delheim Grand Reserve Makes A Majestic Comeback

Estate’s flagship red wine returns after a four-vintage hiatus

Delheim, the legendary Stellenbosch wine farm owned by the Sperling family, celebrates the rebirth of its flagship red wine, Grand Reserve, after a four-vintage hiatus, with the release of its latest 2013 vintage, made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Signifying the apex of Delheim’s red wine collection, Grand Reserve is a stately expression of the most exceptional red wine the cellar has to offer with each vintage. The maiden vintage was released in 1981 and this wine has since garnered prestigious recognition as the true embodiment of the quality that Delheim strives to consistently produce.

“The name, Grand Reserve, signifies this red wine’s stature and after more than three decades, committed enthusiasts still value the wine,” shares Delheim’s winemaker and general manager, Reg Holder.

Nurtured with minimum treatment and aged exclusively in small French oak, Delheim Grand Reserve follows no recipe, but rather a style. The wine is always Cabernet Sauvignon driven but can include a smattering of other Bordeaux varieties, should they add to the superior quality of the end result.

“Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme in our latest 2013 release, which stems from two vineyards situated on a south-westerly slope on the Vera Cruz property, which Delheim’s patriarch, Spatz Sperling acquired in 1975 to compete with the country’s ‘super red wine’ echelon. These cool slopes allow for unhurried and even grape ripening,” explains Holder.

The vineyards are situated on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain, marked by deep soils of decomposed granite that safeguard well rooted grapevines to adverse climatic conditions. In addition the ruthless south-easterly gusts keep overly vigorous growth in check and vine pests at bay.

“Harvesting at perfect ripeness, gentle cellar practices and optimal time in oak, leads to a wine of exceptional elegance and class,” adds Holder.

Dark in colour with a red rim, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2013 shows the utility of the indubitable Simonsberg terroir with flavours and aromas of ripe blackcurrant, cassis, spice and dark chocolate, backed by earthy cedar notes. Vivid and fresh, the palate is well-structured with fine oak integration; an elegant yet firm tannin structure, and a lingering finish.

Redolent of fruit, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2013 is delicious to drink now but merits careful cellaring of five to ten years to reach its full potential. It is a stellar choice for the meat lover and complements well-aged rib-eye steak or slow cooked lamb neck exceptionally well. It also works it magic with a duck and wild mushroom risotto.

This smooth, yet substantial wine retails at R285 per bottle and can be ordered directly from the cellar, or ask for it at exclusive wine boutiques and restaurants countrywide.
