#BestOf2017 – Top 20 Songs Of 2017

It’s that time again where we reflect on the year that was.

Our popular year-end chart returns as we countdown the 20 most played tracks on 2oceansvibe Radio in 2017.

20 Nana – MiCasa

For the past 6 years MiCasa has delivered back-to-back hits! Sticking to their signature sound the trio deliver yet another banger, in the form of Nana. This year has been far from smooth sailing for the hitmakers. Opening up on the recording of Familia the group contemplated breaking up. “This is definitely the most emotional album we’ve made so far. Some people would expect a sad album, based on the fact that we almost broke up, but we wanted the celebrate each other. It’s a happy album.”

19 Sing Vir Liefde – Karlien Van Jaarsveld

2017 has been quite the year for the Afrikaans singer. She tugged at our heartstrings and gave us laughable moments on her reality series, In jou skoene with brother Bobby Van Jaarsveld. She gave birth to a beautiful baby-girl and released her light bearing album, Sing Vir Liefde. In such a tumultuous time, her light and positivity was incredibly welcoming.

18 Love You Still – DJ Kent Feat. Dominic Neill

Released just over a year ago, this DJ Kent song sounds as fresh as the first day we played it. It’s staggering impact followed right through to the top of 2017. It also re-introduced singer, songwriter Dominic Neill and served an excellent jump-off point for the singer’s solo work.

17 The World Is Yours – AKA

The hardest choice to make was deciding which AKA song should crack our chart this year. Between his collaboration project with Anatii and Caiphus Song, The World Is Yours stands head and shoulders above his other 2017 releases.

16 My Baby – Lady Zamar

It’s hard to believe that the singer with the radiant smile had plans to move to Korea and teach English. When only a year later she is the only artist on this year-end chart with 2 entries. My Baby is a compelling record and a great addition to Zamar’s growing discography. With an epic tour and rumoured documentary in the plans for 2018 we can’t wait to see how her journey unfolds.

15 We Could Be Divine – Kahn Feat. Karen Zoid

The front-man of The Parlotones stepped out on his own this year. Releasing his solo album, A Noise In The Void. Far removed from his 2015 offering, a less salty Kahn sounds more hopeful on this record. Experimenting with rock and pop writing styles, Kahn found a radio-hit with fellow Voice coach, Karen Zoid.

South Africa gave birth to a brand new genre. While difficult to pinpoint and credit it’s official inception artists like OkMalumKoolkat and Distruction Boyz have commercialised Ghom. Revolutionizing the sound of radio – the rapper pays homage to growing up in Umlazi, citing township culture as the inspiration behind the sound.

13 Follow – Gangs Of Ballet

Gangs Of Ballet certainly re-invented themselves with the release of Form & Function Part 1 and Part 2. These EP’s allowed the Durban rockers full creative freedom to explore and perform feel-good anthemic synth driven songs. With the final chapter, Part 3 scheduled for a 2018 release expect Gangs Of Ballet to dominate radio charts again.

12 Spirit – Kwesta

After the unbelievable success of Ngud, how would Kwesta even begin to out perform himself? Cue, Spirit – the brooding follow-up to 2016’s song of the year enlists the help of Bad rapper, Wale. With the video set to drop later this month look forward to this song ushering us in 2018.

11 Laaste Rondtes – Die Heuwels Fantasties

Looking for an album, where you don’t have to skip a single track? It would probably be OKAY! The beloved Afrikaans band redefines the listener experience with well thought-out interludes and thematic changes that never seem out of place. Die Heuwels Fantasties chronicles love and heartbreak in the digital age.

10 Gobisiqolo – Bhizer

Every once in awhile there’s that one song, right from it’s opening moment – it lures you in and makes you abuse the repeat button. Gobisiqolo’s intoxicating rhythm fits that exact description. From young little kids to old tannies, no-one was exempt. We’ll be honest, hours have been spent here at the office trying to master this signature dance move.

09 Fading – DJ Ganyani Feat. Goodluck

It’s the collaboration that no one saw coming! Without any warning Goodluck and DJ Ganyani dropped one of the hottest singles this winter. While still a party starter, the lyrical content of Fading still packs quite a punch: Cause I’m broken at the thought of you.

08 Dit Raak Beter – Francois Van Coke

Arguably one of the busiest men in the music industry, Francois Van Coke dropped two albums in a space of year. The follow-up to his 2015 chronicles the journey of a man, a husband and a father – more assured of where he’s suppose to be. So it’s only fitting that Hierdie is die lewe sounds like a powerful letter to his younger self.

07 Destiny – Cassper Nyovest Feat. Goapele

If these were awards, Cassper would probably win our artist of the year. His historic achievements and record breaking sales deserve an entire article on it’s own. But it’s his track with U.S. Neo-Soul singer, Goapele that needs all the recognition. Clocking in just under 7 minutes, Destiny is a compelling track that is accurate for our time. Reflecting on the past, talking about the present and predicting the future, Nyovest does it with the slightest of angst and ease. It’s stunning visual redefines what a hip-hop music video should be.

06 Charlotte – Prince Kaybee Feat. Lady Zamar

Confrontation has never sounded this good. I need to speak to Charlotte / I need to call Charlotte / I need to tell Charlotte / He don’t need you Charlotte. Prince Kaybee enlists the help of Lady Zamar on this Jolene-esque track. With a looming base guitar riff and Zamar’s angsty delivery – the song builds beautifully landing a spot on our year-end chart.

05 Rain Drops – Donald Feat. Tiwa Savage

After mesmerizing audiences with The Red Mic Xperience at the top of the year, Donald  continued his dominance with a stellar visual album, Something More. The singer reveals the inspiration behind the album in our exclusive, track-by-track review. Needless to say the lead single featuring Tiwa Savage was an instant hit spending 4 weeks at the top of our charts.

04 I Do – LaSauce Feat. Amanda Black

With a luke-warm reception to her first release under Ambitiouz Entertainment’s banner – Coolerbag was a misfire for LaSauce. The talented singer rallied up her troops and made us believe in love with her second offering. One of the most played songs on 2oceansvibe Radio, I Do blazed a path for the singer to release her 16 track-album, Broken Lipstick in November.

03 Skepe – Jo Black

His rugged looks & intimidating stature is completely misleading. After interviewing this gentle-giant you can’t help but feel inspired. Jo captures this magic on a 13 track album right on his first try. The title track became a viral hit for the Afrikaans singer and we have no doubt that the Skepe singer will walk home with a fleet of Ghoema’s next year.

02 Suited – Shekhinah

The lead-up to Shekhinah’s debut album, Rose Gold has been masterfully crafted. With 3 three hit radio singles in the bag (Back To The Beach, Let You Know & Your Eyes) the Durban singer gifted fans with one of the strongest albums of 2017. Don’t be surprised when it’s impact spills into 2018.

01 Akanamali – Sun El Musician Feat. Samthing Soweto

Bucie’s go-to producer catapulted himself into superstardom with this summer banger. While he enjoyed a sleeper-hit in 2016 with Demor’s Cliché. Sun El Musician snuck-up on the competition and is our official song of the year.
